My hen 4 1/2 year old Road Island red Lola has a very large and very hard abdomen. When I palpated her abdomen she was very unbalanced, it didn’t feel like there was water. It felt more like a blown up foot ball that was almost about to pop. She had around a golf ball in her crop of mushy food. Unsure of how long she has been in this state as I am in college and moved out last August. She was on a high roost and must not have shown many symptoms as it has gone unnoticed by my family. I didn’t see the color of her comb but she did have dirty vent feathers not sure the color either. I will be going out sometime tomorrow morning to check on her and take pictures. I know there’s probably no cure but I just want to figure out what’s going on if possible. She was 1 of 2 that survived a fox attack last December, the fox took 6 of my girls and I hold these girls very near and dear to my heart. I’m also looking for humane euthanasia. I don’t know how long this has been going on and I do not want her to suffer any longer if we find out there’s no cure. Which I’m thinking it’s water belly or an issue with cancer.

I'm so sorry she isn't doing well, I hope someone has some suggestions for you to try helping her. The only thing I can think of trying is an antibiotic, which wouldn't help if it's cancer. I had one that sounds similar, I noticed her abdomen was large the last few months but it didn't seem to slow her down. Then one day it seemed she was no longer ok and we put her down, it was the right choice for her, we did a rudimentary necropsy and she had masses in her.

If you do need to cull, this is the video I learned from. It's simple, well explained, and gets the job done.
