How long has it been that way?

Usually that means that it's too hot and too dry in the brooder.

On my first group of chicks that happened and I had to soak just their hind ends in a little warm soapy water, one at a time, holding just the pasty butt in there.
Then I took a paper towel and tried to rub the poop out of their vent, sometimes I would do a very gentle squeeze and the 'plug' would come out.

Be careful and good luck.

I'm certain someone else here will have another remedy or two for you.

I didnt notice it yesterday but saw it this morning when I got home from work. Will the soap hurt them? how long can they go like this? Thanks Scotty

I wouldn't just pull it off because if it's bad, it will bleed. Just take some very warm water, washcloth, scissors. Wash their bums with the warm washcloth and cut (very carefully) any off that you can. Get most of it off with the warm washcloth, though. Good luck! Watch them very carefully because this could kill them, very slowly and painfully. It's pastybutt.

I have had a couple of those, once you get if off, put some bag balm or Vaseline on their bum to keep moist, and mix some ground up oats, and ground flaxseed with a little Chick Grit, they sell the chick grit at Tractor Supply, once i have been giving all the chicks this with there feed i stopped getting that,
and keeping them at the right temp.

good luck
Laura

Good advise... forgot to mention that I put vaseline on their hineys after the vent was unpluged.

Many times just pulling it off will cause bleeding.
