Thank you everyone. I definitely have many ideas to mull over. The soda/beer can heaters sound perfect. My partner is actually making some for our cold frame, so he definitely would know how to go about adapting them for a coop. Great thought on the hinged roof for the run. I was thinking of making the whole thing in modular 4 ft sections, then pulling out sections as needed to clean, but a hinged top might make mantainence even easier.
Here's another strangish question: the run will be about 3' x 12' on one side and have the coop/house on that side, and 30inches by about 12' on the other side for the run. Is this too narrow? I'm planning on 3-4 average size birds. The reason for these strange dimensions is that I already have raised beds set in cement w. 4x4's where I want to construct the coop/run.
This makes me even more eggcited (sorry) to get this coop in the works. Maybe once we finally get the garden put to bed, we can start construction!
Oh, then I need to start thinking about what breed(s) to get. I think we're going with dual breeds so we can get the most bang for our buck. definitely wanting eggs and meat, not pets.
