My small coop has a run completely enclosed with hardware cloth, with an 18" skirt, secured with 2" staples. It was put to the test about a month ago. A coyote found the coop and started throwing itself into the side and scratching the sides. I got to watch while my daughter ran to get the BB gun. The hardware cloth did the job.
