This is what is currently covering the vents under the roof of our chicken coop. Is it hardware cloth or window screen? This coop is like 10yrs old but I. Really good condition (made by an ffa student). I feel like it's not but not sure. It feels thicker then window screen. These are best photos I could get it had been painted over at the bottom and is a bit dirty.

Hmm the way it looks fraying at the edges makes me think it's window screen. Hardware cloth is metal wire, (sometimes covered in a plastic coating) so you should be able to feel the difference.
That's what I thought but then I thought I'd check first. I know based on Amazon the 1/4in are tiny but not this tiny.

That is metal window screen. Nowadays screen is made from some kind of softer plastic like stuff but years ago it was made from metal. Not predator proof. My moms dog used to scratch through those screens frequently. I got really good at replacing it. I would just leave it but attach hardware cloth over it for safety.

You can get down to 1/8" hardware cloth which is what this looks like. I used the 1/8" on the bottom of a couple of beehive boxes when I dabbled in beekeeping years ago. It's still too lightweight to keep a determined predator out though.
