I am hoping to use sand in our new coop that will have guineas and chickens. I understand sand with silica is not a good idea. Has anyone used sand in your coop and regretted it? If so, why?

Our open to the ground and air coops are on sand. We live in the "sandhills" of NC. I don't know about the different kinds of sand.

I don't like sand. We get a substantial amount of rain and heat and humidity . I wasn't in a position to remove the sand or pour concrete pads or put in a different base. We went with what was there. THEN, we did DLM. Leaves, pine straw, yard clippings, garden waste, food scraps, wood mulch, shredded paper/bills/cardboard.

Now I can dig down 6-8" and have a loamy garden amendment product that I can remove and use. No smell, no flies, no open moon landscapes. Just the time it takes to collect materials and put it into the run/coops (they spread it, I don't).
