Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if any of you have ever ordered chicks from Murry McMurry Hatchery that have been show quality?
I want to order month old chicks from Murry McMurry it says they would ship January 7th from Pennsylvanian and get to Maine within two days. Is two days to long for month old chicks to go without food, water and heat?
I am ordering these chicks because there is a show this spring that I am going to and I need some chickens for that. I want to get them at this age and then raise them for the show.
Does anyone know of a better hatchery than McMurry for show chicks?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I could be wrong, but I don't believe any hatchery sells show quality chicks. I personally would not order chicks through the mail in winter. I don't think chicks you get now will be ready to show in spring, in any case. I think you should get chicks from a breeder who shows their birds, if you are really serious about showing. Go to the show this spring, watch and learn, and make some contacts with breeders.

I would ask the hatchery, I know some have a water gel they use, I forget the name of it, two days of no food that young, I don’t know. Month olds should be making there own heat but again, I think it’s a risk to take. The hatchery I used would credit any miss fortunes.
I’m sure you know to call the post office and pick them up. Don’t wait for delivery!!! Should I tell you the story of the 700 dead babies.

You could look for local hatcheries. You can see who is NPIP certified and search by state. Go to NPIP website -it is easy to find the place to search by state. Then you will see breed codes, but what do they mean?? On the NPIP website, left side is a link to the breed code document. Find the breed(s) you are interested in and see if any breeders near you have that breed. Not sure if you will get what you want, when you want, but there is potential. Good luck!

Thank you!
Do either of you have experience with favorelles?

hey i see your looking for quality favorelles, i dont show birds or anything like that but i heard great things about a smaller hatchery close to me. i haven't used them yet but will be doing a farm pick up spring 2019.
they are npip certified, take pride in the birds they offer, family operation, they sell stuff at the local farmer market and the lady that owns it is very nice and knowledgeable.
lady i know in town here bought a few of her salmon favorelles and they are beautiful healthy birds, she also bought a few of the brahmas beautiful birds with great temperament.
next year they will be selling Ayam cemani ( the all black birds)
they ship both chicks and hatching eggs for every breed they offer.

Thank you!

I got a salmon faverolle from Meyer Hatchery in Sept. Her coloring is rather darker than any of the pics online, so not likely show quality, but that wasn’t my expectation either. She’s pretty, and fluffy, and seems to have integrated well. She’s only approx 14 weeks old, so not laying yet.
