A couple of years ago I bought some purple spiral tags from the internet for my hens - tag the ones who were laying as I was trying to find out who was laying out of my older brown hens. I bought the recommended "duck size" to air upon the side of caution and put them on. They are about 9 mm if my memory serves me correctly

but I had problems of the chickens legs growing around the spirals. They weren't tight when I put them on and it seemed to affect even my bantams who have smaller legs. I now have one brown hen with a tag still on her which she has had on for about two years without any trouble and I haven't taken it off because they are a real pain to remove. I guess that I should have bought some bigger ones but I just decided to save my money and next time, I'm gonna try the zip tie method.
So my question is; Has anyone else had this problem with the ring tags? And while we are at it did anyone else have the same problems trying to get them on and off? I just cut them off but they are really hard to work with.
My hens are well and truly fully grown but the spirals almost seemed to get tighter over time and with two of my hens their legs actually grew over the tags because I didn't notice the problem. I am certain that they were not tight when i out them on, because that is what I was worried about in the first place, so I checked...Any ideas??? Thanks!
