I have a hen that I adopted recently and she keeps laying eggs with rough spots. This keeps happening and I don't know why. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have this with some of my chickens also. I don't think there is anything to be concerned with although it might be different from mine. A picture might tell a difference. I eat mine I'm O.K! :)

I have a chicken that lays brown eggs with purple-colored rough dots. You can feel them with your finger when you touch the egg. I haven't had any trouble with the eggs and they are delicious!

I have one the same. When/if you wash it, the purple is actually very dark brown spots that is covered in bloom giving it the appearance of purple.

However if there are crazy calcium deposits on the surface of a shell it is caused by a phosphorus calcium imbalance but is usually an individual issue and no reason to make a diet change unless it is in all of your hens. The eggs are fine to eat.

Here is an example, this particular egg had a hole and when I cracked it open it was perfectly fine. Every egg she has laid since coming to live with me has these odd patches of roughness, some patches rub right off. The eggs all look fine when cracked open and they taste fine when eaten.

That's exactly what one of my chicken's eggs look like. Perfectly safe to eat I'd say. I would be interested as to what causes this. Anybody know?
