Has anyone ever been disappointed by the look of thier chickens that were purchased from Mypetchicke

as others have said, you aren't going to get show quality birds from a hatchery. It's not their purpose. They choose breeding birds by egg production (or meat). Even if they don't cross-breed currently, the criteria isn't "does the bird look like the standard" it is "how many eggs can they produce" or "how quickly will they gain weight"

To say that you are disappointed because they don't look like what you expected only says that you didn't do your homework before you ordered. A hatchery exists to mass-produce birds. PERIOD. To get birds that fit a specific criteria, you need to purchase from someone who shares the same vision as you. It doesn't matter if you are buying chickens, dogs or anything else.

I ordered five chicks from MPC this year, for a March 12 delivery. I got a RIR, two EE, an Ancona, and a Partridge Penedesenca. One of the EE died on arrival. All of the chicks look true to breed, and strong and healthy EXCEPT the Penedesenca, which is the whole reason I ordered chicks from MPC. She has been puny and slow to develop from the start and now, at around 22 weeks still has almost no comb to speak of.

I raised two Partridge Penedesenca pullets from Little Gem hatchery some years ago and have dated pictures showing how huge those girls' combs were by this age. I will be very surprised if this hatchery chick lays a dark egg.

I will say though that MPC was wonderful to work with and excels at customer service. Kudos to them for offering some of the rare breeds. Now maybe they can just boost up the quality on breed form.

I got 10 chicks from My Pet Chicken. All are distinguishable as the breed they are supposed to be, but certainly not show quality. I knew that going in. They have all been healthy thus far, and I would definitely let them know about your crossbeak bird.

We have ordered from McMurray hatchery from the time our DD was in 4-H. She is now a grandmother. Most of their chicks were right on. Naturally, not every chick was show quality. It's the same with anything. We have purebred AKC German Wirehaired Pointers. Not every pup born is show quality. Some are pet quality, no matter how careful you are with your breeding. We took many of McMurray's chickens to the fair and did very well with them. We ordered quite a few and then selected the best specimens for show. If you are only ordering one or two chicks of a breed at one day old, it would be impossible to expect to get a winner every time. Throughout the years, we have had very good luck with McMurray. We have had a couple of disaster shipments and they have been very good about making it right. But, considering that we are great-grandparents now, and are retired and still ordering from McMurray, I'd certainly say that they have always done right by us.

this is my first time with chickens and i got them from the meyer hatchery. the chicks are beautiful, and i highly recommend them they were also very nice and answered all my questions<3
