well i want to write a book and have the story line but i dont wanna start something that i KNOW i cant finish, so anyone who has a book published...help? or any help in this department would be great!

The way to write a book is to sit down EVERY SINGLE DAY and write some of it, and keep going, even if you know parts of it aren't real good (you can go back and fix them later - editing is far easier than creating), and just go and go and go until you reach the end.

Then you have written a book

Unless you have an extensive list of other writing credentials -- like, you're an established journalist or freelance writer with a good size resume -- there is NO realistic chance of finding a paying publisher until the book is 100% written. If you end up self-publishing, in any of the varieties of self-publishing that currently exist, you will still need the book 100% written first.

So, don't worry about publishers right now. Just go write the book

Good luck and have fun,

Pat

All great writters started with an idea..and no publisher. Look at J.K Rowling....she had an idea, got squat before writting the book, but now is worth as much as the queen. I say go for it!

Good luck to you!!

I struggled with a similar issue for years! I had lots of story ideas, but every time I sat down to write I would get all over-critical, frustrated with not getting it perfect on the first draft, etc. Had hundreds of pages of plot synopsis and character sketches, but no actual books to show for it.

Then I discovered NanoWrimo. I read the book, No Plot, No Problem by Drew Curtis and visited the website, www.nanowrimo.org. Basically, it's a crazy event where you write a 50,000 word novel in just 30 days.

Within 3 months of reading his book I had written 2 novels and I wrote another one last year. I'm currently working on re-writing so that I can shop for an agent.

The magic of giving myself a crazy deadline freed me from worrying about getting it 'perfect' (even an experienced novelist will tell you that's impossible) and let me just get it done. After the 30 days I had an honest-to-goodness complete first draft of an entire novel which I could then go back and work on. Much better than just having an idea for a book!

If you are interested in writing at all, I highly recommend trying this event. It's a lot of fun and it's one heck of a productive writing month...plus you get to meet lots of other writers!

I am published.

In order to write you must sit down and write.

You will not miraculously get a deal to publish a book. You will get turned down alot and will be given lots of advise on what to do to make people want to read.

If you do get aceepted for publication it can be 1 - 2 years down the road before the book sees the shelf.

It is not a quick process.

Hey
I'm writing a fantasy novel (pretty far into is too!), several fantasy shortish (10 pg) stories, and a sci-fi short story. Only a few are finished, but I've been working on the novel a lot today and got a good couple of pages in. Pretty good for starting writing for things other than school just a few years ago. I've written a magazine article, too, and won a poetry contest in Cricket magazine. A lot of people say that I should send my short stories to a mag like Teen Ink, and that's OK, but not my first choice. Of course I don't plan on making any $$, but I got some $ for the article which was nice. This thread hit me like a smiley bomb and now I have fresh incentive to keep on writing: chicken people are doing it too! I hope to finish my novel within about a year. pat, I'm going to take your advice.

Just had to blurb- I was going to post something like this myself after a while! Thanks!
