I made an order earlier in the year to a very well know nice breeder and ended up with Penedesenca... Just wondering if anyone out there had a similar experience. I had a low hatch rate which is common with this breed and the eggs were much smaller....I just simply thought they were pullet eggs. I am happy about the new breed in my yard but it was entirely by suprise.

The eggs were really small...Nice and Dark... Just thought they were pullet eggs. and then there is the comb and the lack of tail and feet color and temperment... the eye and everything is different than marans. The hatch rate wasn't very good at all. Well several months have passed and I went out to the yard and I was watching them... contemplating how different they looked... Whitish legs and I noticed they looked just like the pen of young penes I hatch a month before them... How strange. It all began to make sense... Bad hatch rate... pullet sized eggs. They are very obviously Penedesenca. The comb is certainly was enough of a give away if not........ the white earlobes.

I'm sorry for the rather bad experience you had with this seller. White earlobes are sure indication that there are not Marans.
Maybe you can talk to this person resove the mistake. If this is a reputable breeder, he can work with you.
I wish you all the best -

Nah... The breeder doesn't advertise that he has the breed at all.. It isn't a biggy... I am chalking it up as a bonus... I like the penes and they were really hard to find and hard to hatch.... I am actually no disenchanted at all that this happened...Just wanted to know if this is a fluke or it happens often. In which case I might alert them... but there is no harm done here.

You'll find that some Marans are mixed with the Pennys to help keep the eggs dark. I had some marans from a very well known breeder and and I had a few chicks hatch that ended up having the "Y" on the end of the comb, so that tells me that there is Penny somewhere in the line.

Good to know.. thanks... Hadn't thought of that... The egg color is superior... i like the little penes... the ones that I hatched that i knew out the gate what they were.... well the egg color was substandard.... so I have a real bonus here. I think I will just run and nice flock of chocolate egg laying mutts now... ha ha ha.....Might throw some Wellies in there a couple of Barnies... ha ha ha...
