has anyone ever tried to breed a PURPLE chicken

Quote:
Ding ding! Purple sheen is possible and also remember something about it depending on the type of black background. I cannot remember which one it is but if you are right, then it would be on ER(Birchen) background.

Many solid black chickens actually are Birchen based with extra genes to turn them solid black. (btw, brown red and birchen are the same. Only difference is the former has gold, the latter, silver)

Other than that I can't help much.

So, there seems to be a *little* bit of purple iridescence (see, I looked up how to spell it!) in a lot of birds (actually one of my speckled sussex hens has a noticeable amount of purple, on the black parts of her feathers), and I saw an Australorp once that had a fair bit of purple.

In what breeds or sources thereof have y'all noticed this "defect" (from a SOP perspective) being most common or pronounced?

Grew up with a poem...this thread reminds me...

"I never saw a purple cow.
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one."

Anyone else remember that one?!?!?

I would be interested in seeing a true purple chicken. Of course, for a while I was searching for a true black (not dark blue) betta fish too...must be I'm attracted to the unusual. (Don't tell my ole man!!!

Does anyone know HOW the sheen on a chicken's feathers works? That would certainly help to figure things out. Anybody? I will try and research just for my own amusement... lol

I've noticed the black spots on my gold based birds, d'Uccle & Sebright are VERY purple in the sunlight. However, my RIR etc have very green black on them
