I'm only just starting out. I bought 3,000 Meal worms from Rainbow Mealworms that cost $20 including shipping. I also bought some darkling beetles off a guy on ebay for ~$20 but I not sure they are producing anything, its been almost a month and no babies that I can see. Wheat bran from the bins at my local Raley's is $1.50 a pound, so that's been cheep. And carrots which to be honest I haven't paid much attention to the cost because we eat them too.
So far I've got a bunch of pupa and that's it but I understand it takes a few months to get the full cycle running. I'm going to order another 3,000 mealworms this month to fill in the gap.
I also built some cabinets on the coop so they don't live in the house, wife wasn't having that.
