I have a mare due in roughly two weeks. I just went out to give her two shots (Rhino & Potomac Horse Fever -- Im pretty sure), she gets two more in two weeks (ya im two weeks late -- I really hope that doesnt affect anything, or Ill just quit with these two). Anywho, RIGHT after I gave her the PHF I noticed hives on only that side of the neck (left). Im sure they must have been there before the shot, cause theres no way they came that fast, but it was dark so I dont know for sure. Theyre not air bubbles or anything, its all over the neck, not visible, but I can feel them. Anywho, is should I be concerned? Also, if you have any tips or suggestions on my giving these two shots so late, please let me know. Thanks!

That is an allergic reaction, probably to the vaccine. I don't think the pregnancy has anything to do with it. Keep epinephrine on hand. If the mare has an allergic reaction she may well have one again. Anaphylactic shock can be deadly.

should i be concerned about the baby at this point? nothing has changed or gotten worse and she doesnt have a fever?

Baby should be fine. Just don't give her any more vaccines at least until after she foals.

well they seemed to have maybe gone down slightly or stayed the same. I dont think it had anything to do with the shot. Its been hot and humid and stuff so maybe the weather? I dont know. Anywho, shes eating and drinking well and isnt acting funny at all and doesnt have a fever and hasnt gotten worse or spread or anything, so Id say were good!
