Has anyone had success in raising hens to lay eggs without Layer feed?

I do not have a local place to purchase organic feed and would love to figure out a way to use something other than bagged layer feed all the time. Anyone have any success in doing this? I have put out oyster shells and they have free range of everything! I do not cage at all.

Of course it's possible, my grandma didn't have layer feed. But, it depends on what level of production you're willing to settle for. Most folks today want an egg a day, and that level of production requires top-notch nutrition. If you're willing to settle for 3-4 eggs a week, you could probably just free range. I have over 100 hens right now and dont mind a reduced production. I have been working with the ag agent here as that was my thoughts..They done this years ago but things have changed so much. If I stop giving them feed..this group of hens will drop down to maybe 16 eggs a day...

I think it will effect their long term health too.

However, I do cut back during the height of insect production. However, for me in So Dak, that is only July and August, with some reduction in june. Getting by just off the land will depend on what part of the world your geographical location is. Close to the equator, more doable, anywhere else, not so much.

I feed my chickens a Cracked Corn, Barley, Wheat & Canola Seed mix. i do not buy from a store but buy from local sellers. All though it is a lot cheaper (12.25@50lbs) then layer feed you buy from the store, they waist a lot. But what they waist the doves and neighborhood quail eat. I do add oyster shell. I also feed my chickens any left over food. they really love (cooked) meat. There is nothing funnier then a chicken running around with a little smokey sausage in its beak. During the summer and fall fruit stands are the best for free food. They are more then happy to give you stuff that gone bad (my chickens love any kind of melons). Hope this helps.
