Has anyone left their chickens alone for a few days?

We've left our 12 girls for a long weekend and they did fine. Gave them extra food and 2 waterers, plus a few tomatoes and cantalope halves. We did have to wash out the waterers because they got slimy in 4 days - we rinse ours every other day.

I'm not sure what we'll do once they start laying eggs. Will it be bad to leave their eggs in the nesting boxes? Any thoughts?

I would add, put their water as far from the feed bin as possible, it will stay fresher longer. Also, if it is a plastic or galvanized type waterer, put it up on something to keep them from kicking it full of dirt.

Your question is the same as I had, I can make sure there is enough water and feed, its the eggs that concern me. I have a neighbor that I may hire to check on them every afternoon or something like that. We are wanting to do some camping this fall...would be the first time away from the birds since we got them in late March.

Most neighbors who don't have chickens are happy to check on yours while you're gone for the reward of the eggs (or at least some if you need some too....)
