You shouldn't expect show quality out of birds from a hatchery, ANY hatchery. I was fortunate in that my dark brahma roo turned out nice enough to be shown, as did two of the dark brahma hens. They are absolutely fine for a backyard flock.
I will be ordering a mixed bag this time around - a few easter eggers, some speckled sussex, a few salmon faverolles and the naked necks. You pay a small charge for a mixed order, but worth it to me. I don't plan to take delivery until May when our weather is more stable.
If you wait until warm weather and don't want packing peanuts (males added for warmth), just tell them and you can pay a small postal insurance charge (like $2) and skip the males.
