has anyone put sand in brooder?

for grit/to play in/give chicks something to peck at?

It works very well as brooder floor covering. Sometimes better than shavings as its easier for them to get their footing.

I just did today. I chose playground sand. A couple of the chicks won't quit pecking and eating it and I'm a little concerned that they'll eat too much and impact their crops! I put it in there for them to dusbathe in and occasionally nibble on but...

I'll wait to hear if I need to remove the dish.

I put sand in yesterday. They loved it! they were scratching and playing. It gave them something to do. Someone wrote a post that said they would only eat what they need.
