We tried it with tomatoes, but it is really hard to keep moisture in the hay long enough for the plant to soak it up.

I think wrapping the outside of the bale would be a good idea, too. I've thought about trying it also, but our summers are really dry, esp. late summer, when a lot of plants really need the moisture to fruit.
