The unit itself is just a small box with a cord that comes out the bottom. It pulls up at the programmed time (or at first light if you buy the photo sensor), and drops down at the set time/twilight. You attach two rails to either side of the opening in which a door will slide up and down. I think Foy's sells sheet metal doors. I bought a poly cutting board from Menards. You just mount the box about a foot above the door, and attach the cord to the top of the door.

I'll grant you they are expensive but they really are slick, and makes your job as headmaster much, much easier.
 
I called Foy's. Their model is nice with the battery operation and the autosensor. However, to get their year's guarantee, you have to buy their door, so with that and shipping you are looking at about $250. Since I don't know much about electronics, I am seriously considering this model. I don't know all the details, but the battery operated version of the chikcencoopdoor.com brand is $324.
