Has anyone used Duckweed as a feed supplement?

Last week, a friend of mine told me a story about when he was a boy his grandfather would harvest Duckweed to add to the scraps that he fed to the chickens. Now the chickens had no prepared food at he time ( this was in the mid 1930's) and the extra protein was needed.
This got my curiosity up enough to read up on its properties and surprisingly Duckweed is 50% protein. As I am always looking for additional food sources for my birds (free) I am going to try this.

Good to know. We have a pond in the back yard that's fully covered in duckweed. I may offer the chickens some to see how they like it. They eat kudzu and maggots so they should go for the duckweed too. We may have a never ending supply of food for them if they like it.
