The site looks legit. Never used it before but coming from working in fraud, with any online and/or in-person purchase/adoption like this go meet the owner/puppy in person before making any further decision to take the dog home.

Thank you! If we hadn't liked what we saw, we wouldn't have closed the deal. I knew this wasn't a dog for everybody ... but because of a very special dog I had many years ago I knew he would work for us, although not as a chicken guardian! At 20 lbs., he won't be chasing off any coyotes! And he does not bark, so he won't even be alerting to raccoons or anything else, lol.

I have been looking on line for another Sheltie, and found one. Not a puppy. This neutered male is 16 months old and his story is that he belongs to an older couple that feels they can't fairly meet his needs. I think there may be health issues. In the couple, not the dog. He is young and active.

The connection is through PuppyFinders. Has anyone done business with them, or have any knowledge or opinions of them?

I will say that the cost is extremely reasonable. We have been exchanging emails. The distance is considerable but they are willing to meet us half way, about a 4-hour drive for both parties.

My Sheltie, a 10-yo spayed Sheltie, is slowing down a bit with arthritis and has a (hopefully benign) tumor that probably needs to be removed soon due to its location. Realizing that I won't have her forever, I started thinking about ... well... getting her an "apprentice" and making sure I won't be without a Sheltie when The Time comes, even though, hopefully, she may have several good years left. The new dog will also make a companion for our boy who at the moment has literally nobody but us. Me and DH.

Anyway, I was wondering what, if anything, y'all might be able to tell me about PF.com. Thanks.
I acquired my dog through PetFinders. I was permitted to meet the owner at their residence so I was able to see where the dog was coming from. If at all possible, I would make the full drive to see the conditions/situation the dog is coming from as there is a chance he is coming from a puppy mill. I have a big trust issue in regard to animals and would not want to allow a puppy mill to make a penny off me. If you really want the dog, make the drive. I would.
I would NEVER buy a dog from a breeder while so many are dying in shelters.

Great idea, if possible. Wasn't possible. An 8-hour drive meant an overnight trip for us, with The Kid. To do that just to meet the couple and the dog, then go home and think about it ... at our age ... and try to find someone to chicken-sit and feed Gracie for two days ... no. It all worked out in the end! :) I will give PuppyFinders.com a thumbs-up from this experience!

I didn't get chance to read this entire thread. When I am on my phone, I can search just a thread, but can't find how to do that on my computer....

Anyway, I was going to say, PuppyFinder is for anyone. There could be scams, but there is also total legit people. PETFINDER is for rescues ONLY. You must be an official rescue organization to post a dog. If you are in needing of rehoming your dog, or you foster a dog on your own without the support of an organization, you cannot use Petfinder to post the dog. For these situations, like the couple you got your dog from, PuppyFinder is very needed.

Congratulations!!!! The photos are adorable

The dog they got was an older dog not a puppy and already neutered so he didn’t come from a puppy mill. He was already over a year old.

And I totally get that but not everyone wants a rescue. Some people want a predictable temperament and traits of certain breeds. Yes there are many purebreds in rescue but not a lot of purebred puppies.

Also for certain jobs like police dogs and service/guide dogs they have to be specially bred and shelter dog won’t work.

Also another thing that I’ve never understood is why so many rescues import dogs from overseas? Doesn’t that take homes from shelter dogs too??

Plenty of perfectly good dogs in shelters and rescues here without importing more.

Especially since a lot of the ones they import are sick. Just recently a bunch of dogs from Asia brought brucellosis into the country.

Rescues are great, my brother has two and they turned out amazing, but not everyone wants one but also not every place has good rescues and shelters. Down south and a lot of other places there aren’t any good, adoptable dogs available because they take all the adoptable ones and ship them up north or CA or wherever other populated areas. Both my brothers rescues came from down south. And they also charged crazy high fees and some have super strict requirements. I know a lot of people who have tried to adopt dogs and it was too complicated of a process and/or they wouldn’t approve them for stupid reasons, etc. and they ended up buying a dog. There are lots of stories like that. I think a lot of people, myself included, would love to rescue if it was easier but so many of them make you feel like a criminal or something and turn away so many perfectly good homes it makes you wonder if they really want to adopt the animals out after all.

Yeah that sounds way too complicated. Totally understandable.

I agree!! Some of the “requirements” are a bit much ... and so, not worth the hassle when you can just go buy yourself the puppy you want...

Yeah exactly!! They make it so dang hard that a lot of people just get frustrated and give up and go buy a puppy! Which is the exact opposite of what they want but when they make it so dang hard, it’s what happens. I almost feel like it’s harder to adopt a dog nowadays than it is a kid haha

And I mean I still don’t know that I personally would buy from a puppy mill or even this site even though it’s clearly worked out for so many, I prefer to search for reputable breeders of my chosen breed, specifically ones that do the sports I want to do with them, I kinda need a specific one, but I know plenty of people who also don’t want to wait 6 months or a year or more for a puppy from a reputable breeder and go buy one somewhere which is also totally understandable but for me I don’t mind waiting but the rescue requirements are crazy. I’d almost rather get a dog off Craigslist before it ends up at the shelter. Those are the same dogs that end up at shelters anyways. Just without the middle man ha

No doubt. :p
This is my sweet Sable girl.

Super duper expressive face. :D

I just read through 15 pages hoping the OP got the PuppyFinder dog... so happy it all worked out!!

Sorry to hijack! I have to say @21-hens.. I rescued a “pitsky” at 4 months old. She’s 3 now and I think she might be a basenji/Aussie cross oozing with personality! Every time I see pitsky I always compare looks
