View attachment 1941326 Sammy (left) is not well leash-trained, and hard to manage with a cane in my other hand. I'm not ready to turn him loose until I'm sure he'll come when called. So Gracie is baby-sitting! It was fun for both of them. She stays close to me, and he did very well with her guidance!
That's great!!!
A testament to them both!
He is kinda tiny isn't he?
"Does my 'sister' make me look like a midget?"

Yes, he is VERY tiny! What you said. Or... "does my brother make me look fat? :gig Gracie looks like a TANK beside him! Shh.. I didn't say that out loud, right? ;)

Speaking of names... when I am out in public with a dog (been a while, but I will be taking him at least to busy parking lots for exposure, since he needs socialized), I never tell strangers his real name. Why? Because what is the first thing people do when they know your dog's name? "Sit, Duke, sit!" Yup, they start testing to see how smart or obedient he is. Why do they do this? Maybe they think they have a "way" with dogs. But why should my dog obey a perfect stranger? He shouldn't! And a well-trained, obedient dog will obey only his master, not any random stranger.

I just feel that telling a stranger my dog's name is like giving away my car keys. So my dogs have a working name that they respond to, and a public name, like "Fluffy," that people can call them, which means nothing to the dog. I'm remembering that a lot of obedience training requires discipline first of the handler, then of the dog.

Sigh. I hope I'm still up for it!

BigBlueHen53, I've been following your story here, and I'm so happy things are working out well with your new dog. Sunny/Sammy (?) is gorgeous, as is your Gracie. Sounds like a happy ending for all of you!
Dogs are just wonderful animals. We've had our dog, Brutus, for about six years. Got him from a MN rescue that had went to Missouri to save some dogs who were next on the "kill list" at a shelter there. I shudder to think that our wonderful, sweet, loyal dog would have been euthanized if he had not been rescued. He has been the greatest companion, full of fun, and has brought loads of happiness to our family.
So glad you found your dog for "the Kid". I'm sure their relationship will prove very beneficial for both of them!

Thank you, it's going well for both of them. Sammy is trying to bond to me because I'm home all day and have been working on leash-training him, but tonight I'm handing the leash over to The Kid. I gave him a lesson in leash management last night, and if he stays focused it should go well!

I'm so glad you were able to rescue your Brutus and that he has been a joy to you! Kudos to you for that, and to all who rescue shelter animals. And to all who spay, neuter and breed responsibly! :clap

The Kid got to walk Sammy this afternoon and help teach him Sit (with supervision). They also played fetch in the living room and hallway. The Kid is teaching Sammy the command "Drop It," because he can't remember the command Sammy had previously been taught ("put it down"). Sammy is learning it quickly (treats help with this one!). I don't normally post pics of my kids, but y'all have got to see this smile...

Awww, so cute! I don't know who looks happier - "The Kid" or Sammy. Thanks for posting all the pics, it's such a heartwarming story. Glad everything's going so well.
