Just found this thread. I am so happy you found an adult sheltie, he sounds great. So cute, shaded sable is my fav color. Another sheltie fan here, although I have only had a couple. And a couple mixes with sheltie in them. Most of my dogs just fall in my lap, so I rarely go looking for one. And the one time I said, "This time I am going to get my sheltie" one fell in my lap! The love of my life, too, although he was not a healthy dog. Most expensive "free" dog ever. You have enough experience to know when you meet him, if he is the right dog for you. Are you taking Gracie to meet him too? In my opinion, that is the most important thing, although my experience is that most shelties naturally gravitate towards other shelties. Can't wait to hear all about it.

Thanks, @townchicks ! Welcome to the thread. No, not bringing Gracie. Not room for her plus the kid plus the crate for the new dog. Plus, we need her to stay home and guard the chickens!

I know there will be a period of adjustment for her. She has been an "only" all her life, even as a whelp (part of her "specialness," lol). She is very bonded to me - if you've had Shelties you know they can be intensely loyal to a single person. Is why right from the start we are going to make sure Gracie and Sunny both know he is our boy's dog. I will help with that, but he will not supplant Gracie. Ugh! It will be HARD!!! But I can do it! We got our girl a cat and I had to do the same thing ... HER cat, not mine. Until she moved out... mine now, lol. ;)

Do you have any special plans, like hunting, or doing S&R with her?

We tossed the idea around some. Likely she will end up being a big drooly pet.
Hubby has been on a waiting list for literally YEARS for her. Things change, we are older, we both have life long medical issues now (manageable ones) but it all affects how much we can do in a day.

She does come from show and working lines.
 She may be a natural and end up search and rescue. A couple litter mates have been chosen for search and rescue.

I am killing time with you by the way....waiting on pics of your new guy. :p

I have a friend that used to do S&R with their bloodhounds. I think most bloodhounds are naturals for it. The hard part is for the humans. Not just practice training, but taking first responder training, and working in rough terrains, being able to leave a job at a moments notice, (without getting fired, it takes an understanding and supportive boss). She also, surprisingly, was met with a lot of hostility from other members of the local group, and was told that "they don't like bloodhounds" She ended up switching to another group. We never could quite figure out what the problem was. Your baby sure is a cutie, love the coloring.

Same here....and last dog was a std poodle, couldn't believe I found one at SPCA just when I needed him.

That's the rub for me. I am able to drop everything and go but mobility for me is becoming more of an issue.
She is a darling for sure. :)

Her mum is a full coat liver color. At least I think that is what they called her color. :hmm

I am saddened that your friend was met with breed snobs.

I know, me too. So counter productive, they lost a smart and dedicated member, with a good dog. Personally, I think they felt threatened that their dogs would be overshadowed by a bloodhound. just stupid. One thing she learned, that I'll pass on, is to always have her dog on a leash, or long line. When they are on a trail, they'll walk right off a cliff, or into traffic. Her dog walked right into a wall once, when she was new to training her. They just follow their nose, and their eyesight can get obscured by wrinkles when their head is down.

Yup. That nose goes down the ears and eyes go off. :lau

on the bloodhound let it wear a snood look them up but can lessen perception due to ears in snood but helps to keep the ears from the water .. I am excited to see the dog ..

I am already working on some cute fleece ones for our droopy gal.
:D
