You DO NOT need to have a shutter of any kind. Go with the coop as designed. The front is supposed to be OPEN year round.

I have to scale it back due to size and budget, that is why I am going to use shutters in the winter
 
You'll see when you get the book that there are several different house designs shown, From small backyard coops to big comercial egg farm coops. The main thing is, when you build one, Don't go and close it all up when the weather gets chilly. Build it as shown, and you'll have no problems. After you have read the book, You'll see what I'm talking about.
