Has my bird gone insane?

She most definitely was in a fight, probably with some sort of predator.

If it was a predator, it will be back. Make sure there are no breaches to your setup, and lock up the other girl securely at night.

Maybe set up a game cam, or similar.
I have a game cam and a driveway alert that I will set up. Thank you for the suggestion.
I also have dogs that bark at EVERYTHING.
The chin link pen is also wrapped 3' high with plastic netting. Very secure.
Hard to believe that anything could get in, and not be trapped once inside.
My wife goes inside the pen every day to tend, pet and inspect the birds and pen. I will do a through inspection of pen, but pretty certain one bird has flipped out on us.
Nothing of this incidence makes any sense.

I really doubt it being the hen.
Check for blood on her beak. On both beaks, actually.

Those predators can be so sneaky.
I hope it isn't the hen, as it's horrible thinking one of your pets killed the other.
Sorry you're having to deal with this.

Welcome, and sorry for your loss .....

I would very carefully inspect the net covering, and perimeter for any breaches.

Weasels are good climbers, and can easily fit through chain link. I suspect the net covering to be a weak point. Coons will zip right through most netting with ease.

Good luck.

I've had Barred Rock hens with a RIR rooster once. They killed him, & ate him. So it is possible for hens to kill another whether it's another hen, or rooster.

Rats are very sneaky, could even be one of them.
There are rats
I don't think the chicken did it and watch out for her cause whatever got your other girl could be coming back tonight
Will most definitely be on the watch. Should a predator show up, it will get a dose of lead poisoning. still believe it was the other hen.
