Has your broody ever...

too cute
yeah, they all pretend to not like them. My dh does the same thing but when he was here I would go outside to see what he was doing and he would be over calling the girls with scratch or some other treat. His excuse "they wouldn't stop following me", yeah

All right - I give up!

As I said earlier I went out to check on Rudy this afternoon and even though she got off the nest when I went in this morning, she was back on it this afternoon - conferencing with my oldest hen. While I was in the house cleaning up I heard some squawking outside and when I looked out back I realized that the girls were squealing with excitement over earthworms that the rain had brought to the surface. I was happy to see them so excited...until I realized that Rudy was out there running around and enjoying herself with her sisters.

About an hour later I checked and didn't see her outside so I went to check the coop and she was back on the eggs and doing "that broody growl" when I walked in. I thought that maybe the temptation of earthworms was more than she could pass up and it was just a fleeting moment. She was, after all, back on the eggs.

Within the following hour I looked out in the backyard and there she was again with her sisters. They look like a professional search & rescue team when they cover the backyard...all lined up, evenly spaced, making sure not to miss an inch of yard where a good bug could be hiding! (They're so cute!) And there she stayed for the rest of the evening: outside with her sisters, 'til the end of the day. When I went to close them in for the night, she was up on the roost with the rest of the girls. She had this look like, "what did you expect me to do? just sit there for days?!"

So....I figure I'll just wait and see what happens the next two days and if she's done, she's done and that's fine with me. And if she decides to continue sitting (which I doubt, and I highly doubt at this point that they'd hatch anyway) I'll just put my Buff Orpington chicks under her when they come in. The best part is before I got the eggs for her I said to my husband: "You watch. I'll go through the trouble of getting these eggs, bringing them home for her, and then she'll just be done..."

Sometimes I just hate being right!!
