Hatch-A-Long (May-June)

First one to hatch! Lf Ameracauna, and I hear more peeping! Yay!

Congrats everyone on beautiful peepers:) 11 of 14 hatched for me. 1 had pipped and started to zip on wrong end. I heard it cheeping loudly before bed but never saw the pip and thought it had just internally pipped. By morning I saw where it had zipped and took it out of bator to discover it had drowned since zipping on little end. The two others were fully developed but quit-seemed to be upside down in shell too. Perhaps if I had not left the tray in they could have rolled the egg around and still hatched so lesson learned. Staggered hatches are off the list unless I have another bator for lockdown/hatching. After losing those 3 to something so simple (would have been 100% hatch rate!) the russian orloffs and other 6 rir had better do good;-) Am scheduled to pick up 4 russian chicks Sunday from same person that I got the eggs from just as a teaser til mine hatch next week. Anyone know where I might find some russians of a different bloodline?

First pip this morning! We are hatching this batch and then will have new eggs early next week. The next batch are lemon cuckoo orpingtons from a BYC member. The farm is going to have a great variety of heritage chicks and chickens by the fall.

The eggs hatching this week end are from the existing flock. Gotta get the brooder ready today.

I got my first pip this afternoon! She is still in there working. She did get a few of the others to wiggle but so far only one pip. Hatch day is tomorrow!

Day 9, noticed last night a horrible rotten smell in the incubator while I was rotating. After reading horror stories about eggs exploding and killing the other eggs I decided to eliminate 1 that smelled and was just a dark blob inside, 1 that was clear, and 1 that was a blob and no detectable veins. Down to 8. On a positive note, I seen wiggly lil babies in all the other eggs

My lone call duck egg has me pacing! I thought call ducks incubate for 26 days?? Well no one told this little one! Here i am at day 28 waiting and waiting. It has made some good progress but not fast enough! Started to pip last night and still slowly chipping away.

So is it normal for chickens to take a while after they pip? Because I had one pip this afternoon and it still has not zipped.
