I'm not quail lady...but know that she uses equine pine pellets...they clean easy and gives the chicks a good footing that helps against splay legs...I also like them because they also break down quickly and go into the compost...Quail lady will say they smell good too....
Hope this helps
Congrats on your hatch rate too!
from the picture those look really large, are they just being used in a certain area or how do you set feeder or water on those?
Hi chickbird~
Sometimes pictures tend to make things look out of proportion, but really they are not that large. Have you hatched buttons? They are tiny to begin with so anything looks large next to them. LOL!
The pellets are about the width of a pencil, maybe a little smaller. And anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2" in length. Most being about 1/2".
I use them in the entire brooder. The food and water are no problem. right now my food dish is just the lid of a peanut butter lid and it sits just fine. water is a small parakeet tube type water , and I sit it on a butter bowl lid , to help keep things dry. It sits flat no problem.
One thing I really like is it stays put. No worries of it scooting and them ending up on a slippery surface.
If you want just a small bag to try, you can find it at pets mart for cats, brand is exsquiste I believe. I look later and see if I still have the bag. Just make sure it's pure pine product and no perfumes! And by small bag I mean about 20 lbs.
I know what Quaillady buys is about 50lbs at a feed store. It's sold for keeping horse stalls dry.
