My broody hen started sitting on 16 eggs on the 13th. This will be here first time (and mine) I thought I was going to give her 12, but they just kept disappearing under her... so I kept going. I hope that wasn't a bad decision... but I guess only time will tell. They will be a mixed bunch if they hatch CLB rooster and hens are BO, EE, Maran, Barnevelder.
I waited 5 days of her being broody before I gave her the eggs.
She is an EE and was top of pecking order, so it will be interesting to see dynamics if she is successful. We built her a nursery pen right in the coop, and im making sure she eats and drinks at least once a day.
Not sure if I will attempt to candle eggs on day 7 or not, its a bit awkward to get at them.

I love broody hens. They are often worth their weight in gold.

We set eggs- 9th, 10th, 11th, & the 12th at 10pm CST. 104 all total...
WE SHOULD HAVE OUR HEADS EXAMINED!
However-I'm SUPER excited! :celebrate
All Amaraucana chicks! LAVENDERS & BLUE SPLASHES, even hatched a red splash last January 21! I AM LONIN' THESES SPLASHES!:drool I'll get photos included on the next post... BTW? Is there any way to tell whichever chick ones will "splash"? Bought the parents as chicks from a local farm supply store. Clueless at how lucky we were!:ya
Sssso, the pins & needles wait is about to get the best of me...UUUGGH!
:wee

30 eggs in the incubator. A barnyard mix of these breeds Easter Egger, Maran, Plymouth Rock, Australorp, Orpington, Sussex, Salmon Faverolle, Welsummer, Delaware, Rhode Island Red, Leghorn, Red Ranger, Silkie, Bantam Cochin, And Bantam Brahma.
Their flock is running all together so even though I have no bantam eggs one of the bantam roos may have gotten a standard hen.

I put mine in the incubator today, also. There are 17 B/B/S standard sized Australorp eggs, and 12 White Breese hatching eggs in there. I am not going to run the turner for a couple of days.

Turner will go on Sat or Sun depending on how the candling goes Saturday

I have a broody Buff Orpington, set her on 10 eggs 11th. started another 48 in the bator same night. mixed eggs. some EE, Buff crosses and couple barred rocks. I hope they do better. I had 9 chicks hatch last week on days 19 and 20. out of 34. 10 not fertile, all rest died in shell at various stages. I was in ICU for major blood clot to heart/lung a few days. when I got home, temp in bator was a little warm., about 103, and the water was gone. Hubby did what he could, but they weren't his biggest worry. Bluefeather, ,my avatar, is sire to at least 3 of the new chicks. I have 2 silvery blue, 6 black with white and one yellow chick. at least 8 males and maybe just maybe the yellow one is a girl EE. only 2 have ear muffs. Bad as I hate it, looks like most of these are for the freezer.

Sorry, the hatch went bad. Home the doctors got you right as rain. Hopefully, you will do better next round.

Oh, the fun. I just love hatching. I am a bit of an addict/

The husband does not like my plan for the continuous incubator. He does not think I can do it. I have an app on my cell that helps me keep track. I just have to mark each of the eggs for the batch that they are. Lie the eggs that went in yesterday got the date on them. That may be what I do for now. Put the set date on the egg. If I have two different breeds or species going in I can always mark that and make sure the timer on the app is named the same.

It's a little late, but I have 14 seramas that are on day 5 (three are under my broody silkie...it's her first time, so we'll see how she does!) plus 5 more seramas that are on day 2. I've done it so many times but hatching NEVER gets old! Can't wait!
