Can you fill in the missing information before we look at what can be done to the weight losses that need to line up with the ideal please.

Ok so now we can see that 3 of the eggs are losing weight too fast and one not fast enough (#3). The "too fast" weight loss is going to dry out the embryo if it is left at this rate for the 50 days. The weight loss (moisture coming out of the shell) can be slowed down by covering up the large pores that are on the egg shell surface. Moisture is being released from those pores and the larger ones need to be covered over with pinky-nail size pieces of duct tape. I would cover about a dozen of those holes at this time. The third egg is of concern as well but for the opposite reason. The egg is not expelling moisture fast enough (only 12% weight loss) and the embryo will be too wet and not develop properly. So the incubator humidity can be lowered to dry out the air and cause the egg to expel more moisture. However the other eggs might be affected negatively by lowering the humidity setting. What humidity are you running at now?

I just put 8 eggs in a cabinet incubator yesterday. Average weight was 630 grams and Temp is set at 96.5, humidity is 28%. This will be my first attempt at incubating emu eggs as my male has always hatched out chicks. Anyone else incubating?

Yes, I'm incubating duck eggs day 3 and it's my first time incubating anything.

When is your approximate hatch date? and will you be candling the eggs?

The first 8 eggs should hatch around Feb 15th. Can't candle emu eggs, not sure how to tell they are not developing other than a lack of weight loss? How are the duck eggs doing, are you weighing them?

I am not weighing the duck eggs, I don't have that type of scale, I candled them 2 days ago and some of them seem to be developing. They should hatch between Feb 1st and 6th.

I plan to send in the DNA from the shells when some of my emus hatch this year. It cost $20 each sample, do you think that added cost would be easily recovered in the chicks or do you think most people buying emus would rather get a cheaper chick of unknown sex? I guess it will be interesting to find out. :)

Wow! Chick-sexing from the egg DNA! That means you could take samples from the eggs in the nest of a newly-departed Male-plus-chicks, and find out the ratio of male chicks to females . . .

which I have wondered about for years.
