Hatch-Along - putting some eggs in the bator for a march hatch

Our last day of turning, then after our PM turn it LOCK DOWN!

Then three or so days of hanging on a thread lol

So now we have done our last candle, one looks more transparent than the rest, I have concern that we may have lost one recently. We have left it in for the duration of lock down. All seem to have good sized air cells.

Last water tray is filled, eggs are positioned with a bit of space around them and now to sit back, monitor and wait!

Three days to go.....watch this space!

Oh boy, I think we made a newby mistake with our count.

I am hoping all will be OK but we were early with our lock down. We began our count from Day 1, not Day 0. What we thought was the PM of day 18, was actually the PM of Day 17. Easy mistake and honestly, started to get confusing double checking the count, nearly had to take my shoes off after Day 10!

From my understanding, the chicks could be at risk of drowning if the air cells has filled with water due to the higher humidity for the extra day.

Nothing we can do now except wait it out and see. Have also set the eggs with their x's facing up on the mesh, they move quiet easily so hopefully if they start to wiggle while we are not around we will see some evidence if the eggs roll over a bit.

Before I forget I had a pic to share in here (and the DIY section)

Here is my home made brooder box, mostly salvaged materials. Using a ceramic heat globe in a desk lamp. Had some left over dowel so made a climbing/perch thing. Will probably leave it out for the first week but a good spot to keep it until the brooder has occupants!

Just a little excited about our first hatch, just in case you could not tell.

I candled my eggs again to get a picture, but my camera didn't like that

So, I looked up pictures to show you.

This is an infertile egg



The next three are earlier in the incubation period. Notice the obvious blood vessels. They look like little spiderwebs to me

This last one is lat incubation. Only the air cell is visible due to the chick taking up all the room!



So, yea. I hope this helps you distinguish which eggs are fertile in your batch. Happy hatching!

P.S. Only 5 of my set 28 eggs were infertile so, barring any late deaths, I should have 23 chicks!

I will toss that egg it hasn't changed at all since I last posted. On a happy note I have 6 NN assorted mix eggs set on Sunday.Curiosity got the best of me this morning and the little white bantam egg got candled a little early. It looks like your fourth pic.

. Now I just have to wait a few more days to check the larger brown and cream eggs.

Hi everyone! We LOCKED DOWN tonight! I was questionable w/ 2 but decided to leave them in for the lock down just in case since I'm a newbie. Here's to hoping for a successful 1st time hatch in our new 'bator!

We are on day 8 of our first silkie hatch today, waiting on UPS to bring the candler, and then I will candle them tonight.

We watched a couple wiggle last night before bed, then after reading (ended up being quite late) I checked the temp one last time, and one had pipped somewhere between 1am and 2!

My wife got up and we watched that tiny little hole until 3 in the morning, even heard our very first cheep!

While intently watching them all for movement, and Australorp eggs rolled on the wire, not a little wiggle but up and moved house!

This morning, no zipping of the first egg and no new pip's, but we have only just come into Day 20 so we still have the best part of two days before worrying about non hatcher's again.
