Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

If there was movement then it wasn't a bloodring. Sometimes veins can look funny & appear to be bloodrings for a few days. Check it again in 3-4 days & see if there is a change. I never toss the 1st time I think I see a bloodring unless it's obviously WAY behind on development & more clear than cloudy. They often surprise you.
That's good to hear. Out of all the eggs I candled this one is definitely the oddest though but there was movement so hopefully every thing is ok. Thank you

So Grandpappy built his grandchickies a new brooder this weekend and they are loving it!! they have so much more room to run around adn can fly without us having to worry about them getting out (for now).... We will be adding a lid in the next few days. The rubbermaid container just wasn't going to work for much longer. Here are some pictures...

They are so cute! Glad they are doing well!

Nice build on the brooder!

Well I'm back in the hatch-a-long try again club : )

I set 41 Eggs on 2/15
& it was not w/o mellow drama!!

2/13 - I arranged to meet someone 16 miles from my house to get hatching eggs plus 13 chicks 12 of which I was going to hold 1 wk for a friend.
No big deal, right....

Then it started sleeting, DH goes up the hill to collect eggs a little early, before sundown & finds our potbelly has just had 7 piglets!!
so it is now "Operation Save the Piglets"

Then it is eyedropper feed each piglet every 2 hrs, it takes about 80min to feed them all, you do the math...

2/14 - zero sleep, I feed piglets but not self (ooops) & we have miscommunication & have to go to mtg point 2x to meet person w/ eggs & chicks

2/15 - Still feeding piglets (who are in a brooder b/c they cannot keep own body temp until age 3wks), also have chicks in other brooder.
2pm - "set 41 eggs" or so I thought
4:33pm checking eggs LG is up to 86F , all the sudden our house electrical goes OUT !!!! & the temp outside is 32F & dropping fast
call power coop , find out traffic accident has taken out service to 10 mile area, no eta on fix
Start making plans to put a fire in a burn barrel to boil water to put in jars to keep chicks & piglets warm overnight (trying to remain calm, glad I had just feed pigs hot milk)
have covered all brooders etc. w/ blankets & pillows to hold what heat they have...

7:30 pm Electrical back on !!!! Removed blankets, put heat lamps back on, feed piglets, feel asleep

So, the LG resumed at 7:30pm 2/15 & went up to temp & has stayed steady since reaching temp. I am hopeful the short "false start" will be like the hen laying an egg the day b/f going broody.

Fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, we have 2 pigs left to sell & I'm going to go feed again...

The piglets are in a brooder on the floor right under the desk holding the LG w/ 41 eggs, so we are all hanging out together...

The piglets are so cute. I'm going to look for the pic I have of when I was younger. I wouldn't worry much about the eggs. I'm sure they will do fine. You're right about the hen getting on and off, so I'm very sure if there are problems it won't be from that. Sue

What a crazy couple of days, seems like it's catching. I've been spending the weekend with my poor gimpy dog who got hit by a car, his leg/pelvis went under the tire buct luckly our dirt road is very wet and squishy so nothing broke. His hip was dislocated, the vet said it went back in well. He'll have the leg tied up in a sling wrap for the next week and we'll hope for the best!

OMG!! How adorable! You do have my sympathy though for what you are going through... you'll be ready for vacation when you get done with this!

Did you have to take them from their mamma because she couldn't keep them warm in the barn?

ohhh... so sorry he is hurting! Glad nothing broke but dislocations hurt like He##.... and I know this from personal experience, since I have dislocated both hips, one knee, one ankle, both shoulders, one clavicle and most of my fingers at some time or other!
I think my dog was given Vioxx when she was recovering from knee surgery, and later in life when she suffered from arthritis in her back... we were able to give her Baby Aspirin also on days she didn't need the stronger stuff but was achey. Otherwise with ours we used lots of fluffy pillows/beds, blankets and even heating pads.

I'm so sorry about your dog. Those cars are so unforgiving. Our's was hit and killed just a couple months ago. I normally don't let him out front as cars think it's a race track, so it was my fault but you'd think someone could have stopped. We were home.

He's got some chewable beef flavored pain pills, he thinks he's getting a treat twice a day! My neighbor felt horrible about what happened, but it's a tough call on fault. All of the "neighborhood" dogs are out on our road a lot, it's a small dirt road with 5 houses, and it's just us that live here that come up it... but he does like to get too close to cars. Hopefully this will cure him of it.

A hard lesson to learn, but glad he is getting the chance to change his ways. I am so lucky mine (that I have now) aren't prone to getting near moving vehicles... I hope they never do but I know it can happen with any of them.
