Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Today is day 14 for our marans and day 7 for our mystery eggs. We havvent candled yet my fiancee is at work so we plan on doing it later after the hockey game..can't wait to see our chickies tonight hopefully its good results. I will post something later probably maybe some pictures if we can

At day 14, veining isn't always obvious. You also may not see the chick moving. Chicks in the egg rest sometimes. Also, I find that every egg will look a little different. Some chicks seem to take up more room in the egg, some less. Sometimes I'll see what looks like a lot of room at the bottom of the egg, when other eggs seem to be pretty filled up. I would say that if you can't see an obvious blood ring (and I mean really obvious, sometimes veining can look like a blood ring), and you can tell the egg has developed somewhat, and it's not smelling or leaking, leave it. You might want to mark it as questionable though.

The one that hatched naturally for me on day 23 I had marked as dead/blood ring on day 17 & it looked like what you described, w/ a dark area in the middle of the egg, no visable veins, no movement, it is a pure maran, so pretty dark choc. egg. I vote leave them in!

I always leave in any that have obvious development even if I can't see veins or movement. Both babies that hatched from my last batch I was sure were dead when I candled at lockdown.

Thank you all for your help! With all those votes in favor of those babies I left them in! :) They're all marked with question marks, but still in. So glad to have all these experienced voices helping me out! I can't wait to meet some babies!

Last spring I didn't candle until after the 15th day. By then they were mostly dark and no movement (some were BCM) They all hatched, so I'm hay to read that you are leaving them in!

So we just finished candling...man I really wish we could see through those dark maran eggs!!! It makes me worry that we can barely see through them and don't know what's going on in there.

No signs of blood rings, bacteria ring, or smell....so we are keeping our fingers crossed for them!

only 4 more days til lockdown which is crazy!!

We had a lot better viewing of our mystery eggs because they are light brown or white. we saw atleast 4 out 6 of them dancing around for us!

Here is a video of one of the mystery eggs, possibly a golden lakenvelder, it was taken on my phone so the quality isn't too good but you can see the little baby moving around! So exciting! These mystery eggs are at day 7

I understood the candling idea from reading so much about it... but sure wasn't prepared for how cool it was to do it and see veins!!! And when we saw the 'dancing' it was awesome!
Glad yours danced for you tonight!
We aren't going to candle ours anymore, I don't want to stress Gracie by messing up her egg organization and it is cold in the coop, by now we would probably just see the dark blobs anyway, so time for us to let mother nature and mother Gracie do their things. Not easy to sit on our hands, but I think it's better for her.

What day are your eggs at? If we had a broody hen I think I would go crazy not knowing what is going on. We check our eggs so often by looking in the bator and I know we wouldn't be able to do that with a hen. I think the waiting is the hardest part of this!

Waiting is definitely the pits!!!!

We are on day 15? We gave them to her on Saturday the 5th... so I think this would be day 15... actually 15.5 since it's late! LOL

Im on the same day as you, day 15.5 almost to lock down YAY. Your wait wil be much more difficult though since you cant see the eggs rocking or pipping and zipping. I feel for you its gonna be a tough last few days
