Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Some good news and fingers crossed that the late bloomers come through!

My bantam egg on day 21 is rocking and chirping!! I am so excited as I wanted this one to hatch so badly, since I have no idea which bantam of my 4 breeds is came from! My barnyard experiment! Lol

400

10 Chicks out and 5 more have pips....it's crazy in there. I haven't taken any out as the others are still trying to hatch!

I still have one that pipped Sun afternoon with no progress. I can see him breathing in the little hole, but no zip at all. Should I assist? I really don't want to, but its been a full 38 hours. Nothing else from the remaining eggs, we are on Day 23 now. On the plus side Baby Bird is doing great!

If it were me I would assisit, at least make his hole a little bigger an see if it helps. Read this and decide if you want to help

I awoke in the middle of the night to very loud chirping and had a little bantam fully hatched out! It has feathered legs so it either from my d'uccle or silkie, but doesn't have 5 toes...it also came from a barred rock full size roo, so that could explain the toes if it is a silkie...hmm. Just waiting on it to fluff to be able to tell better.

I gave 2 other eggs on day 24...should I remove them? They were moving on day 20, but have done nothing since...really think they are dead.

So, 5/7 isn't too bad for my first hatch! I am pleased! I also get to do this again on less that 2 weeks, with some eggs in the bator and under my broody silkie. Though I'm not sure my nerves can take it!! It's Amerucanas, Marans, and BLRW, and from what I have seen, those are the hardest to hatch.

5/7 isn't bad for any hatch! Our BLRW have been super easy to hatch - as have all our Wyandotte crosses - so I have you have the same luck. Our Marans hatch rate hasnt been anywhere near as good. :(

So I ran the "float test" on the 3 eggs that hadn't hatched. I got one that sank like a rock...opened it up and sure enough hadn't developed at all.....really a dud. (Since they were Maran eggs it was nearly impossible to candle anything in there. The next one was a high floater...so I opened it carefully. There was a non-viable chick that had developed pretty close to finished inside, but it was dead.... The last one was a a floater, but almost completely submerged. I don't know if this is what is meant by a low floater or not. I'm thinking a low floater might actually be completely covered in water. I'm on day 23 so....I'm not sure what to do with this last egg. It's back in the incubator for now.
