Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Here are my chickies!! Can you spot the little guy? So far everyone is doing fantastic. I just moved the bantam in with the big ones and he/she is holding its own. :)

I float tested both remaining eggs that are on day 24 and they tested viable, however I didn't see and rocking or movement. I'm leaving in one more day then calling it. Hope I get a surprise, but not holding my breath.

So what's my percentage if I hatched 5/7?

71%

Nice! I hope I get that.

Bad news here -- I can only assume that temp. spike to 104 was for longer than I thought.

From the 11 chicken eggs that were day 23 today I have only the one from Egg J as a live hatched chick.
Chick J hatched last night w/ a small amt. of help w/ the zipping. Very tiny green egg, very very tiny grey Ame looking chick
who I didn't think would make the night but who is about 18 hrs old and doing better. BUT it is a lone chick which is not good :(

I need to candle the 6 duck & 1 chicken due this Sat to see if they are still alive, hopefully they are & chick J will have friends soon.

I'm really bumming about this , of the 10 eggs that didn't make it:
1-infertile
1- after 23 hrs peep no pip I assisted, but it didn't make it, I believe I should have removed membrane, not just shell, b/c it managed to find the one drop of liquid in there and drown :(
1-wrong end tiny pip - assume drown
2-never internal pip, looked like they should have been ok to hatch, assume temp spike killed them?
5-never turned, so either temp spike got them or drown

So, I'm pretty upset about loosing chicks that really should have been fine.

My neighbor happened over today (to give me 4 adult guineas they didn't want anymore) and felt sorry for my terrible luck w/ the cooler bator and has loaned me his Little Giant Bator to try. Right now I hardly have the heart to think about it, but I am getting a Trio of SQ/Heritage Buckeye on Sat so at least I'll be able to use a _real_ incubator for a run of eggs from them. I'm not sure how many eggs I'll get right off, & I have some other breeds I was hoping to hatch in the coolerbator so I'm now going to try to fill it up (holds 30) and do a big hatch of everything I want all at once, I hope...

Meanwhile, I need to figure out what to do about a lone chick the size of a tree frog.

We thought everything was going good too. The only thing we can think of is that when they were shipped it was just too cold. although there was a heat pack who knows how cold they got in there. and although they were packaged very well the mailman could have just been too rough with them. So now we are going to try and find a place that isn't too far that we could possibly pick eggs up so we don't have to worry about them being shipped.
I'm just below Wheeling on the Ohio side. I'll have eggs & chicks both available by this weekend.

Our 8 are out and about with Gracie... she is wasting no time in educating them on the ways of scratching and otherwise being 'chickeny'. Got a few pics today (actually quite a few, dang things are adorable with their mama fussing over them)
Here are a few favorites....

And of course, that favorite game.... Peek-a-boo!!!

Gracie is the best.
My cooler-bator is the worst!
I now have a neighboor's GL 30 egg incubator on loan
but after that I'm going back to just broody hens I think, at least when the house heater in winter.

Thanks for sharing the pics, peek-a-boo is my fav! The first one at the feeder is way cute also :)

Sorry to hear about the incubator troubles! The more I hear about incubators the more I plan to go with chicken breeds who like to be broody. We couldn't have ever hoped to be as lucky as we were with this hatch.... but having done it, and gone through the nail biting of not being able to really do anything to help her out.... I am so glad we did! I just hope our next broody decides to get her groove on during nicer weather!!!
Good luck with the GL 30!
