Our broody hen hatched out 2 chicks yesterday! I candled all the rest of the eggs. 2/3 of them looked to be infertile or early quitters. I stuck the other two that I thought might still hatch in our incubator and we moved mama and 2 chicks into the brooder with our store bought chicks. It was so cute! Our hens name is Irma Jean. Miss Irma was very excited about all of the chicks "she" hatched. She was just clucking away to her little brood. Makes it feel like spring, even if it is only in the 20's right now!

It was really funny. She seemed to be pleasantly surprised and very pleased with herself! Right now she is mothering 10 chicks. We bought 2 cuckoo marans (one of which died :( ), 2 dominiques, 5 ameraucanas (probably EE's). I was looking at the shells of the ones that hatched, I think one of them is a Columbian Wyandotte x Black Sex-Link. The other chick is for sure Columbian Wyandotte x Speckled Sussex. We had one in our last hatch that my Aunt and Uncle picked out for themselves. They sent me a picture of her the other day and she has the most unusual feather pattern. It's somewhere between speckled and barring. Maybe a little bit of both? I hope this new chick ends up looking like the one they have. I'll have to try to get in there and take some pics this morning now that they are all in the brooder. Mama has been pretty good. When we moved her all she did was growl at me a little bit.
