so I really feel much better now, I only have 41+33 in the bator(s), 13 in the brooders in the bathroom (of which 11 are just being held for a friend who was going to pickup tomorrow but will be next wk sometime & the 5 in the brooder in the driveway don't count b/c its chicken math they just don't count, & then well less then 40 other birds total, I'm pretty sure, even if you count the 6 new adult Guineas...but they eat ticks so they really shouldn't even count at all, right?

Saves a lot of trouble that way. If you don't count, no one knows how many there are to complain about, so no complaints

Still not sure EXACTLY how many babies are in the brooders. They move around too much to count without catching them all & counting as you drop them back in the brooder

I got 47 new adult birds in the last 2 days. Had to build an "emergency coop" to house all the extras. 4 roos & 43 hens, Barred Rocks, RIR's, 2 Delawares, 1 SLW, Comets, a barred cochin bantam roo, a golden d'Anver roo, a RIR mix roo & a big black roo that we aren't sure of the breed on but he's beautiful.

Put 14 quail in lockdown yesterday, set 6 assorted turkeys yesterday, setting runner ducks, assorted banties & layer mixes from the new flock on Monday. Already have a bator full of assorted banties set a couple days ago & another staggered hatch of assorted LF & a couple banties due on the 28th & 2nd. And more shipped eggs on the way.

Then I have the order of chicks coming from Meyers on the 20th of 170+ assorted chicks. Good thing I got a new brooder along with the adult birds yesterday. 3 ft wide, 5 ft long & 4 1/2 ft high counting the legs. All of the red broilers, the light brahma & the slw pair went down to the basement into it today to make room in the big brooder in the playroom for the rest of the chicks out of the little brooder. I'm down to just over 50 chicks, poults & quail in my brooders right now, but about 122 adult birds (if I counted right) including 8 quail & 12 ducks, until the 13 I sold this week are delivered, picked up, or shipped.

Haha! He knows me too well. He's one to talk though. He is just as obsessed with chickens as I am. He was outside yesterday building a "silkie apartment" connected to our coup.

Here is my count so far: 14 adult chickens outside in the coup, 9 adolescent birds in the big brooder. 10 chicks in the small brooder with Irma Jean, and 19 eggs in the bator going into lockdown this morning. Looks like I have some catching up to do . This is only our second year having chickens. So my husband probably is right. Just give me five years

Who needs 5 years!!! I got my 1st chickens & ducks a year ago next week from TSC Chick Days when I took my (then) 5 yr old in to get kitty litter & food.

Here are our baby chicks at almost 3 weeks old! i can't believe the time is flyingggg. They are such trouble makers and i can't imagine having a lot of baby chicks running around two is enough!! for now

We have 14 adult and 8 chicks with Gracie... but are looking at Cochins (LF) and Dorkings as probable additions this year. Still hoping to have a flock with enough broodies to raise clutches every few months or so and raise enough to allow plenty for freezer camp through the year, rather than having to buy broilers once or twice a year.

They are adorable! And growing fast! Glad they both are thriving... it is so neat to see the personalities as they develop. How are the eggs doing you set? You should be headed into the final week with them, aren't you?

I know what you mean. Time is flying by too fast! Ours are big time trouble makers too and soooo messy! I can't wait until they are ready to be moved outside to the coup. I had to hold onto mine to get any good pictures of them. They are so fast and flighty.

I think we are in the same boat with our chickens right now. We would like to have enough roosters to go to freezer camp so we don't have to buy broilers. I think a couple of ours are roosters. The ones we still have are all Columbian Wyandotte x Buff Orpington. So they should have good table qualities. It will be our first time processing our own chickens. I told my husband if he can kill them I will process them. When they are dead it's easier for me to view them as meat. I just don't like being the one to end their lives. I had to take processing classes when I was in college and it seemed like every poultry class I took had a mandatory "kill lab." Needless to say, I did not enjoy those days .

yes wednesday is lockdown for the eggs we have in the bator. sadly though we are down to 4 or 5 out of teh 12 we are having a lot of trouble with our temp this time it wont stay constant. when we candled on friday we saw a progress in the developing but not a lot of mvoement so we aren't too sure of what to expect from these guys. hopefully when we candle on tuesday before lockdown we can some some changes so we know that they are still alive
