Hatch day fears

You can candle without hurting them until day 18, and it doesn't hurt to candle during lockdown but don't do it very much because the eggs need to absorb the humidity to soften the shell so that the chick can hatch. Humidity during lockdown is VITALLY important and without it your chicks could become shrink wrapped which leads to a very stressful and unreliable hatch. Try to get the humidity up, if you can. I am not really allowed to say where exactly in GA I am in case of stalkers, not saying that I think you are one I'm just being cautious about other people out there that might be, if you understand.

My bator is so terrible! Its just a styrofoam minnow cooler (no lid) I have been using plastic wrap and the humidity comes up but not anywhere near where it needs to be. I have a digital thermometer that shows humidity and temp. I just hope they hatch! I understand that about the stalkers. I too am in GA! Thats the only reason I ask

What does your digital thermometer read? They are not always the most reliable things to use, you usually need more than one thermo in the bator to be accurate. And awesome! It is nice to have another fellow Georgian into hatching chickens. I could show you some pictures of my incubators to should you how to make a more reliable one?

I would love to see some other ideas for incubators, my husband and I were just talking about how much I enjoy this and how sad it will be if none hatch. And that maybe we need to put a little more into it. It was just random and short notice that we decided to try and see what would happen, I mean what is there to loose?? Not having eggs hatch thats whats to loose :( I didn't think about that then, but now I am thinking that for sure!

Ok, I will post some different incubator models that I have that seem pretty effective. Hatching is very enjoyable! I love to see the little chicks climb out of their eggs after 3 week of hard work, and I hope you will be able to see it too! Hatching can be very stressful, but it certainly pays off in the end!
