y is it bad if there porous? i have two that r that way and one is growing, so urs might b ok, all mine except 4 were shipped, the 4 not shipped r from my chickens, good luck on everyones hatches!!

when the shell is really porous it means that bacteria has a much easier access to get inside the egg.. so for porous eggs I make sure I mark them (when I only have a couple in the incubator) and I make sure I wear disposable medical type gloves when I need to handle them.. so far I have had 0 porous eggs make it all the way to hatch.. some have never developed.. some have developed and then died... so I try NOT to set them .. but with this shipment every single darn egg is very porous (plus 2 had detached air cells upon arrival)..

even though I wear the gloves and always use a hand sanitizer the eggs may already have been exposed to bad bacteria at the sellers farm... so

.. time will tell if Lady Luck will be on my side this hatch or not

there is also some talk that with a porous egg that there is greater moisture loss and gas exchange going on than with a "normal" egg.. so I will have to monitor the air cells closely throughout the hatch.. i did put in two mutt eggs of my own in with them.. so I am using them as a "control" for this hatch to also monitor the difference in air cell size as the hatch progresses

I'm another hatching newbie. All of my eggs were mailed, I got them from the Swap Thread here on BYC (check it out, lots of fun and great stuff to trade for). I set 6 Sizzle, 11 Easter Eggers and 10 BOs on 9/21. Candled a few last night and see development in all sizzle and many EEs. The BOs had a rough trip - not sure any of those will make it. Also added 10 Frizzles on 9/23 - haven't checked them yet for development.

I'm using a LG still air with wafer thermostat. It is holding temps nicely, except we don't have the heater running yet and the nights have been rather cool and my temps drop if I forget to cover the incubator with a towel

We are trying the dry incubation technique, but monitoring air cells and add water if they become too large.

Thanks for the cute hatching calendar posted earlier, I printed out several copies

I think I may try to put some funds away from my egg sells. I have such a hard time selling eggs. everyone wants them for free but does not want to buy them. I charge 3 a dozzen I think that is more than fair. I just dont know why people do not buy them. I have a mix of brow, white and some easter eggers in green. how much do you ask for your eggs when you sell them.

I think $3 is fair for eating eggs. I don't have any layers yet. I been telling the people I work with I'll be selling fresh eggs.I asked them how much they would give me and almost all of them said 3$. I think that's a fair price. I tell them to bring me their used egg cartons and I will take 50cents off. A lot of people are greedy and do not understand that it cost to provide for your birds. The only people I would give free eggs to would be my parents, and everyone else I just laugh at.

Well, our temps stayed within ok range for the night, humidity holding at about 40% depending on which hygrometer I look at? Think I may need to get another as there is about 8% difference between my two at the moment and I don't know which one to believe... My air temp is varying between 99F and just over 100F depending on the temp in my living room and how much blanket is over the box. How high is too high and how low is too low? WHat range do you think I should be running in? My flashlight died (the one I use for candling) so I ordered a new one last night. With having my incubator inside a cardboard box I need a flashlight to get the readings.... I'll have to take a few pics for you to see our funny setup

but it is working so I am not complaining.

This thread is fun to read. I wish I was ready to hatch so I can join in. I live in Lucerne Valley, Ca. For that member in Calif. I have just
Finished seven coupes and we just got our solar running. I have a nice incubator I got from eBay, that guy in Ok who makes them.
so all I can say is soon. I have some of my birds showing on my BYC page, but most are on photo bucket.com in my album "Lakota Ranch". this thread has been fun to read. Oh, I love that hatching calendar!

OK, I am quietly freaking out now as my incubator is going crazy as I messed up and tripped the breakers with the kettle and toaster! SO the temp is dropping and dropping... I have just pulled the lid off and have tried resetting it... but the temp is still not going up. Now I need to be patient for a few minutes while I wait to see if the 'adjustments' I did are going to do it. Was supposed to go to bagpipe lesson in an hours time (for the 1st time in over a month) and now I have a 'bator on strike! I think the most frustrating thing is that it was all going just awesome and now through my own forgetfulness I have thrown a wrench in the works! Grrrrrr!
