"Hatch to Hen" feed for layer chickens ?

My pullets are almost 9 weeks old and ready to move out with the rest of the free range adult birds. Since they can't have the layer pellets for at least 6 more weeks can I feed all the birds a "Hatch to Hen" starter crumble ? The reason I ask is the All Flock type feeds I usually use is running $15-$17 a bag and I can get the bulk "white label " H to H feed for $10 to $11 a bag. All birds are free ranges over several acres , so the feed is just made available when they want/need it. Also, is it okay to leave out a dish of crushed oyster shells for the layers or will the pullets eat it also ? -Thanks

Yep! Thats perfectly fine. I feed my entire flock, starter. I like that its higher protein, and its crumbles which is easier for ducks. Lest waste. Plus, I personally think that layer has to much calcium. Hens that aren't laying because of molt, age, etc, etc will be getting to much calcium. That can damage the kidneys over time. Its also not good for roosters since they don't lay eggs.

Hatch to hen is just another term for an all flock feed. If you're ever not sure, check the nutrition panel on the feed... that's the important info, not the naming of the feed type.
