I agree, I have lost a few in learning along the way. It is very hard to know when/if to help. I have had chicks die by not helping and chicks the needed culled because I helped and they should not have hatched.
It is posible that the egg(s) under the hen were not "rotated" correctly by the hen and stayed twords the outer edge under her and so stayed cooler than the rest and delayed their development.
