Hatch with me! Placed in bator on 5-13-2010. First hatch!

I just candled, couldn't help myself.

: I culled 5 cochins and 1 barnevelder. Looks like I have 2 marans that might be blanks but I can't really see to well

even with two lights and hubbies help. He is really good at spotting wigglers! But looks like I might have at least a 50% hatch...maybe (knocks on wood).

Much better than what I was hoping for. I might even get at least one of each breed!

can't wait!

I'm going to candle and cull the clears tonight too. Just is sad to do it, so I've put it off! Good for you ~50% hatch would be super! For my hatch I'm predicting 30% based on how bad some of the large air cells look in three of the eggs

What are the air cells suppost to look like?

I was able to candle my Marans eggs with just a good LED flashlight in a really dark room. The blanks just kind of glowed faintly all the way through. The (hopefully) growers had a distinct mark where I could see the air sac. I held the flashlight sideways covered by my whole fist, shined into the airsac, and held the egg so that where the air sac should be was exposed at the loose skin between my index and thumb. On even the darkest eggs I could tell the difference between the clears and growers. Could have some late quitters in there, don't know, but at least I got all the clears out.

Your air cells should be about a third of the egg, but some of mine have air cells that slope down one side and take up half the egg!

Looks really ugly!! and these chicks may get to dry and have trouble hatching

On top of that, when I candled last night to cull the clears, one of the eggs veins looked broken up, so I may be loosing that one

I'm so sorry

I hope they prove you wrong and you have even more healthy fuzzy butts!

On Candleing, I have 2 eggs that have a crooked red line and where the chick used to be it's just a black spot. The line goes all the waay around the egg - do I cull these?

That, to me, sounds like a blood ring. If there aren't any veins present, then I definitely would say blood ring. I've had one of those so far with my banties.

Night of day 18 for me. Just finished locking down for the first time. I think my face was as serious as a brain surgeons. Candled all the eggs, and saw motion in all but 2 of 24. Now starts the nail biting and obsessive observation for pipping. Hope they all go to day 21. My temp has not been all that consistent, sometimes a little low, sometimes a little high. We'll see how well it averaged out. I keep telling myself -"they're just chickens", but I'm only slightly less anxious than when my daughter was born! Please wish me luck!
Thanks for letting me hang out with you all for this. I know... don't open the lid!
