Oh, @jessnurse05 that is so sad to hear! I hope you find your little chick.

I just lost one of my young Silkies. Boo hoo! My stellar egg layers, the Red Stars, are so mean to all the other hens/pullets. They saw their chance and sneaked into the big run and chased poor little Cleopatra out. She ran and hid somewhere, but I haven't been able to find her. I have been calling and looking. I even tried getting the other Silkies to call her, but no sign of her. There is no sign of any attack or predator, but who knows what happened to the sweet girl...

Let's keep hoping our babies turn up soon, in good health.

Did your silkie turn up? My baby didn't, but my reinforcements to their cage have worked and kept everyone else safe and secure.

Here are some of my little ones!

When I saw the pic of your first one on this post I thought maybe I posted a pic of mine and then forgot! Yours are so cute, I love your frizzles, I didn't end up with any :-( The black ones in my batch are taking forever to feather out, they have wing feathers but no signs of tail feathers after 2 weeks. Have any of yours done that? I'm hoping that it doesn't mean that they are all boys because they are so cute and have really fluffy butts so I wanted to keep at least 1. At the rate I'm going for boys to girls I think I'm going to need to set more eggs!

No, no sign of her. Sorry yours is gone, too. Glad your reinforcements are working!

Hataholics, look what I scored on Craigslist!

A farmer a good distance away is willing to put this handmade, metal-roofed coop and run on a trailer, bring it to my property, and set it up for me.
This is what hatching obsession and chicken math will do...
You see, I bought five eggs and was sent ten, and I am thinking - what if I have a good hatch? What if I have more lovely hens I must keep?

This thing is so solid and well built. I don't have good carpentry skills, so this is a very lucky find.

(Confessions of a Hatchaholic, continued)

... and here is the ridiculous part, that I can only admit to fellow hatchaholics -

We have a pesky regulation here, about the number of hens allowed per household. So, even though my lot is three times the size of the lots next door, I am stuck with my small allotment of hens. Unless I build another house...

Yes, I am going to have the old shed on the property converted into a tiny house (about 400sf), so that I can double my number of allowed hens. Of course, it's a good investment, as I can move into it and rent the main house, when I am an empty-nester, and that can provide me a retirement income, in theory. But the main reason is... more chickens!!

What is the most absurd or extreme thing you've done that shows your hatchaholic tendencies?

I have a regulation here for how many chickens I'm allowed to have.... 3! That is all!!!! I would be so happy if it were even 5. But my neighbors don't complain, and this year I will for sure have enough eggs to share. Last year I had just 2 pullets starting to lay so I didn't really get very many eggs and they were pretty small. My neighbors have helped me with building my bigger coop that can hold up to 8 hens, so they approve of my chickens

My plan involves bribing my neighbors and hiding my chickens. I read the regulations and it emphasized keeping your animals in a clean and sanitary environment. I'm not too worried about having an extra chicken or 2 (2 = 5 in chicken math) as long as the coop is clean and nice and they don't stink.

I'm putting the roof on the coop this weekend if the weather will cooperate with me!

That looks nice, how many chickens will it hold?

My coop has 4 walls framed so far.
