Hatchaholics Unite!

Well, I am desperately trying to save one of the D'Uccles. Probably shouldn't, as it's a huge mess of congenital deformities. But it really seems to want to live so I'm trying.

So disappointed and heart broken with this hatch...

Aww, I'm so sorry. :hugs I know how you feel, don't give up on her, I say there is always hope as long as the heart is beating!

26 eggs now in lockdown.

Thanks!

Shes a Bantam Cochin Frizzle :)

Oh no! :hugs Poor thing, what deformities does it have? I wonder why you had such a bad hatch? What was the Humidity and Temp? Did they come from clean eggs? Healthy parents?

I euthanized the poor little angel. It had a deformed/missing eye. Cross beak. Couldn't sit or stand normally- just immediately fell onto its back or side. It's leg were totally stretched out straight. It's tongue was off center. Lots more issues I'm sure internally. I tried for 2 days, then couldn't stand to see the poor thing suffer.

Humidity and temp were good. Had a scare with a power outage when the eggs were pipping, but that wouldn't cause these issues. My vet feels the problems are congenital and are directly related to the parents. Apparently the Mille's are 4 years old and the Goodens are 3+ years old. Much, much to old to be selling hatching eggs from. I contacted the breeder, but she basically just said sorry you had these problems, it can't be from my hens. My birds are show birds. Not ready to kill the business (what breeder, for Gods sake, doesn't hold back offspring over time to replace older breeders- regardless of what you are breeding?! To introduce new stock/bloodlines). Said the vet just gave an "easy" answer. Shipping. X-rays maybe. etc.

My friend in TN (half a country away from me, mind you!) has chicks from same breeder hatching now. First Golden out and it appears to have a deformed leg already as well. Her first hatch she lost 3 out of 5 chicks.

It's really sad that some breeders are more concerned with just production and not quality and health. This has been heart breaking for me. Now I'm going to have to explain to the person that these birds were for that she isnt getting any. I refuse to sell or give a genetically compromised bird to someone. I had not planned on having little Bantams, but now I do.

It's really a shame that people knowingly sell things they shouldn't, just to make a quick buck. I was planning to sell chicks, etc. But I had an upper respiratory issue go around and haven't tested, I will NEVER have birds leave here alive. Unless I can get one tested. So for me, a penny saved is a penny earned. I'll just butcher for my freezer. Honesty is a trait that I treasure!

ok I have a problem with keeping the humidity up now that it has gotten colder. Planning to shut it down when the last eggs hatch and ebay is helping with that as I lost the last two I bid on in the last seconds. Anyway I have a dickie incubator and have the water tray full and also put wet paper towels in the bottom and it is still only 30-40 % got chicks due today and tomorrow and Friday but can't get the humidity up. post office is helping with my addiction as well as it crushed 3 boxes of eggs and another box took 8 days to arrive after they received it.got silkies , wheaten marans, and blue black splash and lavender ameraucaunas, and lavender orphingtons due. Any ideas?

Wow. You are indeed a hatchaholic lol. My ducks aren't laying, so no new quackers til spring. Surface area is the key, so make sure the towel is opened up wide. Add more I would guess. I'm if there's a way to tack some up on the side.it's hard to keep them wet when they're spread thin but if you put one end in the water, it will act like a wick.
