hatchaholics - what do YOU do with all the roos?

SONEW123, Seriously your neighbor in the country complains about country noise!!!!!!!! That is just thier problem, they should move to town so they can complain at least about town noise. lol

I gotta agree. We already have a neighbor who isn't even in the same town (we straddle the line) who is warning us about roos and we have 26 acres of forest! She didn't say anything about guineas tho. Muahahahaha.

Warning you? There's some nerve for ya. We get people who move out here to the sticks from the city and proceed to put up all kinds of spotlights to keep away those scary coyotes and stuff. LOL. Those lights usually get shot out on a nightly basis until they give it up. If you're afraid of the dark, stay in town with the street lights.

LOL! So true. Yep, my husband went and told everyone we were getting chickens (sigh) and that one neighbor said 'well that's fine, but there better not be any crowing to wake me up!'.

She does have noise ordinances on her side, but if I let the roos out after 10AM she might not be able to do much about it. Still, I do like my neighbors so I try to play nice. And we've noticed that our guineas may be loud, but you can't tell the diff between them and the normal forest birds/frogs/turkeys/etc - so I think we can get away with it. Too bad a rooster sounds so.. roosterish!

I keep just about everything I hatch ...

Don't ask how many roosters I have!

If you are hatching alot you might consider puting Apple Cider Vinegar in your chickens water about a month before you're going to start hatching .... I've heard that you get more female chicks!

Personally I love the sound of a rooster!

I can understand not having 10 of them having a crowfest in the back yard but something about the crowing just says country life to me. I can hear mine crowing right now talking to the neighbor's rooster. I am so thankful that we are allowed to have them and have not had any complaints from the neighbors but I did postition my coop away from the neighbor's property so that at least they won't have to hear the crowing right outside their windows. I agree with being considerate but on 26 acres you should be allowed to have a rooster or two if you wanted. If you don't want to hear country noises, don't move to the country!

I sell most of my left over roos at a poultry swap that goes on around here every second saterday of the month, i have rare breeds so its not hard to find someone to buy them for about 5.00$ or less, i also pair them up so if they want one roo they have to take the other roo

and this usually works very well, if i end up with any left over roos i eat the

grr! somehow I got ghosted at craiglist. I post one ad a month with no funny business in the right category. Something I said must have messed up their filters. I'll get it fixed but maybe someone is telling me I need all these chickens.

Just ask around with people you know. I have an older guy I work with thar will take all of mine and clean them on halves. It works out nice since he also feeds them when I'm out of town. As far as the noise I live on six acres and can barely hear my own roosters crowing. If my neighbors have a problem with it they need to invest in insulation. Also I've seen some pictures of cspons on here that are good looking and don't crow. That may be an option since the operation may be saving their life in the long run if that makes you feel better. Eventually you will need to find something to do with all your roos. Craigs list may be the way to go and you may get good results trying to give them away.

We gave away 2 roos on Craig's List... to a guy driving a BMW who said "we are starting a farm thing". He didn't even look at them when he came to pick them up. I am not sure he was going to process them either. At the time I didn't really think about it but a coworker suggested he may be fighting them.

I hope not, but in TX Cockfighting does happen and often there are 100's of people and birds involved. Going forward we will be buying pullets or sexed chicks so we don't have to worry about. I know it's an ancient "sport" seen as accepted and common place in many cultures but I still hate to think that might have been the fate of the 2 we raised from chicks.
