Hatchalong! Setting Eggs April 6, 2012. Anyone else in?

I've had one chick out since 5am, how long can I leave em in there? because the other eggs are just barely piped. He isn't dried off yet, so I've still got time, but I don't think they'll hatch in the mean time that he does dry off. Any input is appreciated. And also ( I'm still new to all this hatching stuff, only done it a couple of times) what is the difference between dry hatching and (I don't know what you call it) wet hatching. My first ever experience hatching eggs were from some quail I raised. IT WAS AN AMAZING HATCH, I think only one or two eggs didn't hatch. And all I did was throw the eggs in the turner and plug it in, I did nothing with water, didn't even set the temp( I must have gotten lucky and it was already set or something) LOL. I can't believe I got an almost 100% hatch that way. The last hatch was a mix of duck eggs and some LF chickens. TERRIBLE. I had to put some chicks down (I know that's expected) and only got about 4 out of ten from the duck eggs and about 7 out of 23 chicks. I'm not even going to tell you about that batch, I did every wrong thing imaginable, it was a miracle I got what I did. So I guess I can't complain.

You are better off leaving the chick in the incubator they are good for at least 24 hrs, you risk causing problems with the ones pipped if you open your incubator to take the hatched ones out. I always wait till I have several dryed and ready to come out so I am only opening the incubator a couple times. If I had a larger bator I would leave them all in intill the hatch was done but with my Brinsea octagon it gets pretty crowded. The main concern is drop in humidity and causing "shrinkwrapping" of the unhatched chicks that have pipped. As far as the differnce between "dry" and "regular" hatching, with "dry" no water is added to the incubator intill lockdown "regular" is adding water to the incubator to try and keep humidity around 40 to 50 % intill lockdown then bringing it up to around 70. If you check out the learning center of this site there are a couple great articles on both types of hatching that go into much greater detail.

At work with the Jeopardy theme song in my head..... I took off Friday because I know I wouldn't have been focused. Of course, they probably won't come out until Saturday anyway.... I just want to watch...

So today is day 22 and i have no pips nothing nada ziltch should i be worried? I know i had live chicks as of day 18 so i am a little worried. Temp has held steady at 100 and the humidity between 64 and 70% so what say you?
I know it's like the quiet before the storm, can't wait!

I'm in lockdown as well. I was able to make a candle out of a very bright light and a box. 7 eggs appeared to be infertile and were tossed. Some of the really dark eggs appeares to have weird air sack but I left them just incase. Some of the blue eggs looked alive so i am excited about those. I got the humidity between 65-74, can't seem to stabilize it:(

I'm on day 20 no peeps, no movement, no anything, starting to get nervous!

Good luck everyone!!

I didn't go into lock down mode yet. The air cells on mine aren't looking that big yet. It's been more humid in the basement room than I like this past week. Between the cold and rain here then yesterday hits 80 degrees and very humid. Another cloudy day today looking like rain any minute. I only had 2 air cells looking big enough. I candled the rest and either movement or veins still, had one more dud that quit that I could see. I may be delayed a bit because of the two power incidents I had earlier. I turned off the turner but I won't move them to the hatcher or add water til I see bigger air cell or an internal pip. Mine are due late Thursday night and Friday afternoon to make it a full 21 days for them.

Fowlsessed: they don't need food or water for like 3 days, so don't be in a hurry to take it out. The chick absorbed all that egg yolk so they are good for awhile. Just watch it, if it's looking stressed, or your stressing to much reach in real quick and pull it out otherwise leave it in there. It's your call.

Chickchick& Korban: don't stress yet your temp could have just been low. Give them time.

lamoka: I see you are in NY. Were you in any of that snow that hit NY yesterday or the day before when ever that was?

like Zoo says Have fun & Happy hatching!

Good Luck everyone!

Two more chicks just popped out! So far so good. I think hatching will always be a nerve-racking/stressful/exciting time, no matter how many times I do it. Only time will tell.

. I'm really trying for the 26 and 27 though. This is when it's the fruitful days of the waxing moon. According the Old Farmers Almanac your supposed to get healthier chicks if they are hatched on those days. I know most people don't go by this anymore but this was my experiment this time around. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed

I don't have anymore eggs to set, but if I did I wanted to try and set some on these days to see if I got a better hatch. See which was better all around or if it did make a difference at all.
