Hi all,
I’ve got a runner duck that hatched today, and it looks like the yolk sac has been absorbed… BUT the membrane still has blood vessels and is still connected to the duck. This is my first successful hatchling so I don’t know what I don’t know. Does this just take time? I plan to leave him In the incubator until he’s all dried out - the brooder is warm and waiting for him. The photo is the best I can get without opening the lid. I’m trying to keep that to an absolute minimum. The membrane was/is very dry so i crack the lid every few hours to do a quick mist of warm water.
I’ve got a mirror and a little stuffie to keep him company until I can procure another brand new hatchling
Any feedback would be so appreciated!

I’m adding a closer photo, since he’s moved a bit, so you can see how leathery the lining is.
I’m hoping this is sort of like a belly button… it dries up and then breaks off?

Can you carefully take him out and get a better picture of the attached part?

I would not let him be dragging around the membrane I would cut it off Immediately before it gets caught on something and rips his insides out.

It needs to be cut in the correct place though... You do not want to cut it too close to his body.

I wouldn't cut that yet. Put him and the shell in a bowl (leave the shell attached) so he can't drag it around. Make sure he can't get out of the bowl. Line it with paper towels so he's comfy, and then wait a few hours. He should finish absorbing it.
Did you take this duckling out of the egg?

It looks like it hatched a bit prematurely and is still absorbing blood through the cord. I see blood in the shell still.
So I peeled all the shell away and now he just has leathery lining attached. I’m not sure if I should cut the lining off so he doesn’t bleed ? Will this just fall away? I’ve got him wrapped in a damp, warm towel… should it just be dry and warm?
