Hi I'm a new member Anna I have spent all morning reading posts but can't resolve my dilemma.I have a broody Silkie who has been sitting on some eggs we purchased on the 9 th June we worked out 1st July should be hatch day 2 hatched on that day they are supposed to be white miniature silkies but are completely different(not an issue) . The hen Nando is still sitting on the remaining eggs and hasn't come of the nest. We are putting chick crumb and water very close and she is eating and drinking and so are the two chicks. How long do we let her sit on the eggs? We haven't checked them for viability as decided to let nature run its course? We also have another Silkie Bod nesting with her and she seems to be looking after the chicks could this be stopping Nando getting off the eggs? Please can anyone give me advice on what is best?

Hens eventually get off the eggs, realizing they aren't going to hatch. If it has been a while I would take the eggs and cheep to them. If they respond then the chicks are alive and will be hatching or at least try to (some chicks can't make it out of the shell). If they don't respond then I would put them somewhere warm in the house but let the silkie move around, stretch some and the like. Careful with water close to new chicks, they could fall in and drown or catch a chill.

I hope this helps. Congrats on the chicks!

[/quotethankyou for responding will try your suggestion and hope the eggs cheap back. I am proud of Nando for hatching 2 eggs. That is an achievement for a first time broody. The dish of water is only about 75mm deep it is a Tupperware lid so hopefully the chicks will be ok. But will move it away in any case. Will keep you updated and Thankyou so much for replying
